Pierre Assouline is definitively right (as expressed in french) that Daniel Mendelsohn would be a model for intelligent criticism by blending more than good classical culture, relevant insights -and hindsights- and fluent writing skills. Here down, a review from DM on the Bienveillantes by Jonathan Littel was pegged with much praise from LittératurOL.
Fair enough, a great deal of his reviews is available for free at New York Review of Books. Maybe his own website would be more extensive, maybe not.
